Giving to ASPIRE

ASPIRE is a multi-award-winning outreach program working with 56 of the most educationally disadvantaged and under-resourced schools across Sydney, and regional/remote NSW. Since 2007 ASPIRE has been working with years K-12 in low socio-economic status (SES) communities where traditionally not many school students go to university. ASPIRE has created awareness about higher education, enabled student aspiration and raised attainment.

A dedicated team of professionals works with the same schools every year to ensure that academically talented students don’t miss out on the right information, support and opportunities to pursue higher education. Students take part in a structured, evidence-based program that includes participating in a range of in-school workshops, on-campus events, residential programs, and university and academic experiences.

From 2010 – 2018 university offers to ASPIRE students increased by 155%; this year there were 1,242 offers to university, with 65 offers to UNSW; and access to education for low SES students at UNSW increased from 8.6% in 2017 to 9.5% in 2018.

"My parents didn't go through to university. My mum only went to Year 10 and my dad finished at Year 7 I think, so I wasn't planning to go to univesity. Once I went on an ASPIRE trip, I got opened up to this world of possibilities and excitement and stuff like that. I changed, and I really want to go to university after that."   Year 11 Regional student

  • 18 on-campus events brought 1,231 students on campus

Why give to ASPIRE?

We all know education is important, but inequality in education persists. By the age of 15, school students from low SES backgrounds are up to three years behind their peers in maths, science, reading and computer skills. Only 17% of the university undergraduate population is made up students from disadvantaged backgrounds. More can be done to ensure university populations are a more balanced reflection of society.
Creating opportunities for educationally disadvantaged students and their communities to engage with a university benefits the whole of society - and helping people realise that universities are open to anyone with academic ability regardless of their personal or financial circumstances is key.
