Higher Thinking Brain Cancer Research Fund

Gliomas are brain tumours that develop from astrocyte/glial brain cells. There are many different kinds of brain tumours and so the World Health Organisation has broadly categorised them as being low grade (slower growing) or high grade (faster growing). If left untreated, low-grade gliomas will progress to become a high-grade glioma and so patients will undergo a combination of chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery to treat the glioma.

Given that the tumour has the ability to return after treatment, the long-term prognosis for patients has not improved greatly over the last 30 years. As such, medical research is particularly important to advance knowledge and understanding of the disease.

Established in 2011 by Shalom Andrews and her husband Dave Taylor, the Higher Thinking Fund supports medical research into low grade tumours.

As one of the leading medical schools internationally, UNSW Medicine & Health spans nine clinical schools, a collaboration of medical research institutes and close affiliation with Australia’s finest hospitals and healthcare providers.

Our community of cancer researchers span laboratory sciences, clinical practice, and health policy; specifically, to translate research into outcomes for patients and communities.

In partnership with the Higher Thinking Fund, we are enabling our best and brightest cancer researchers. Against the backdrop of increasingly competitive levels of public funding, support from the Higher Thinking Fund allows our cancer researchers to work uninterrupted to advance knowledge and understanding of gliomas.

We are only beginning to unlock the potential to bring new interventions and treatment for patients living with brain tumours. With your support, we may generate the knowledge necessary to translate discoveries into improved outcomes for patients and their families.
