With your support we can make real advances in rheumatic disease research

Rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs) are chronic conditions that affect joints, tendons, ligaments, bones and muscles. Most often associated with swelling, pain and reduced mobility, the number of patients presenting with a form of rheumatic disease is on the rise.

In Australia, more than 3.9 million people are living with debilitating chronic arthritis. With more than 1,000 different types of arthritis, most are thought to be caused by the body’s own immune system.

Despite major research efforts and advances, there is still much to be understood about the underlying causes of inflammatory rheumatic diseases, which we understand are autoimmune, causing the immune system to attack the body’s own tissues.

With your support, we can make a real difference in advancing much needed medical research.

With appointments with St Vincent’s Private Hospital and UNSW Medicine & Health, Dr Laila Girgis brings over 20 years’ research and clinical experience. Bringing research discoveries into the clinic, together with her team, she is determining the efficacy of biologic therapies for a range of inflammatory rheumatic conditions; improving early diagnosis for debilitating connective tissue diseases which can involve internal organs such as the heart and lungs; as well as investigating the cellular mechanisms involved in establishing tolerance after autologous haematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

Thank you for your interest and generous support. The Rheumatic Disease Research Fund enables Dr Girgis and her team to advance the understanding of, and new treatments for patients and their families, living with inflammatory rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases.
