Improving Outcomes in Cancer Genetics

Cancer is one of the world’s greatest health challenges. There is much to do to advance the prevention, treatment, and cure of this disease. UNSW Medicine & Health’s cancer research aims to improve the outcome of high-mortality cancers – where the responses to current medicine and procedures are yet to change.

Cancer affects half the global population before the age of 80. Your support would enable us to continue making life-changing discoveries and to develop cancer genetic knowledge in Australia.

Our aim is to improve the survival and quality of life for all people affected by cancer by working through our key areas of focus with clinically informed research. This would initially be using stem cell organoids for the target cancer, with proof of concept and safe gene therapy to be trialled. This would be with a view to leading onto gene therapy for people known to harbour a gene mutation that increases their risk of developing cancer for cancers such as breast, bowel and prostate.

With philanthropic support, the Cancer Genetics Research team at UNSW will be able to address significant health challenges in cancer-facing society and deliver remarkable health outcomes for people and their families affected by cancer.
