Older Australian Twins Study (OATS)

Thank you for supporting the Older Australian Twins Study (OATS), led by UNSW Sydney’s Centre for Healthy Brain Ageing (CHeBA).

Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias are reaching epidemic proportions in Australia and internationally. In 2021, an estimated 472,000 Australians are living with dementia.

Research into the causes of dementia and how to reduce risk are crucial to work towards a medical breakthrough.

Studying twins is considered the best method to investigate genetic and environmental contributions to disease, since identical twins share 100% and non-identical twins 50% of their genes.

With your support, we can expand the Older Australian Twins Study to further investigate genetic and environmental differences and how they relate to either healthy brain ageing or age-related cognitive decline, including Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias.
