Help Us Understand Aphantasia
For many of us the ability to visualise is pervasive in daily life, but for a small group of people the experience of mental imagery is entirely unknown. This inability to visualise is known as congenital aphantasia and is a recently discovered condition in which people report having no visual mental imagery from birth, and likely effects 2- 5% of the population.
Studying the brains of aphantasic individuals will allow us to understand what might cause their inability to visualise. This study will use functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to uncover the structural and functional differences in the brains of people with aphantasia. The findings will allow us to understand why some individuals are unable to visualise and potentially lead to the development of interventions to make visualisation possible in aphantasic individuals.
Our long-term goal is to use these brain scan findings to develop brain stimulation techniques, along with training regimes, that might allow aphantasics to experience visual imagery.
Aphantasia is a severely underfunded area of research, so we need to your help to undertake this research. Your donation will make these discoveries possible and contribute to this world first research. Every $1,000 donated allows us to conduct a brain imaging scan and will bring us one step closer to understanding aphantasia.
