UNSW ALUMNI PRIVACY STATEMENT
The University of New South Wales (the “University”) collects, stores, uses and discloses personal information about its alumni in accordance with the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998 (NSW) which is detailed in the University's Privacy Management Plan.
The personal information of alumni is collected by the University for the purpose of providing opportunities for alumni to remain connected and involved with the University. This includes, but is not restricted to:
• corresponding with you;
• informing you about courses/events conducted by the University or its controlled entities;
• informing you of and providing alumni benefits;
• informing you of opportunities to engage with and support the University;
• informing you of University fundraising appeals;
• providing you with information about commercial products and services with exclusive or referential advantage for alumni; and
• for benchmarking, analyses, quality assurance and planning purposes;
The personal information of alumni may be disclosed to the following types of organisations:
• University controlled entities;
• contracted service providers which the University uses to perform services on its behalf; and
• government departments or agencies (including contracted service providers of government departments or agencies) where such disclosure is required or authorised by law (eg. disclosure for the conduct of QILT graduate outcome surveys conducted on behalf of the Commonwealth Department of Education and Training).
The University retains the personal information of students who have graduated in order to provide services to its alumni. The University maintains this information by collecting information directly from the individual concerned. For example, the University collects personal information when an alumnus updates their contact details, registers for an event or subscribes to a service.
The personal information that the University holds about alumni is stored in a secure database operated by the University, remains confidential at all times and is stored and destroyed securely.
The provision of personal information by alumni is voluntary. However, if an individual does not provide updated contact information the University may be unable to provide that individual with the services and benefits available to the University alumni community.
Alumni have a right to access, amend or request deletion of their personal information that the University holds about them, subject to any exceptions in relevant legislation. Alumni may also withdraw their consent for the University to use or disclose their personal information in a specific manner (eg. opt out of receiving information about University courses/events).
