What is the biggest challenge you have faced in your career, and how did you overcome this?

Understanding that it is important to have a point of view and to speak up. Do not let others determine your self-worth.

How did your time at UNSW Sydney prepare you for this?

My supervisor at UNSW Professor Carmel Maguire was key in encouraging me to understand my own value proposition.

Name a woman or women you look up to most – why do they inspire you?

Three women who were my mentors and sponsors in the early years were Professor Maguire, Dorothy Peake and Lesley Symes – all pioneers in stepping up to leadership roles in Australian libraries and education.

What advice would you give to the next generation of female leaders?

Have confidence, know what you think and be inclusive and find your voice. It’s a diverse world.

Do you think your industry is doing enough to champion gender diversity?

The information sector needs to continue to work on this, early achievements can so easily slip.

Have you seen a change in gender diversity in the workplace over the last few years?

Yes there have been changes in many of the sectors I now engage with, finance, resources, professional services, education, but there is no easy quick fix so women and men need to work together to make lasting changes that suit the modern world.
